Research Reflection

English 121

Research Reflection

As I look back at my semester of English, I see a lot of goals, surprises and other sorts of information that I have achieved and wanted to express. The biggest school I had walking into English was finishing the semester with an A. I wanted to learn how to write less casually. In my former English classes that seemed to be my only drawback. Writing casually was the only thing standing between me and getting an A in English. I can honestly tell you, that I have somewhat achieved this goal. I still write casually, but now I know how to use certain words and know when to use them. I honestly still need to work on writing less casually. I have been told several times that when people read my writing, they feel as if I am talking to them. It is just one of the many things I still need to work on. I found a lot of surprises when I was researching my topic on vinyl records. I have discovered a want of crazy cool information. I did not know that record sales have increased by 25% the last five years. I did not know that records are indeed making a strong comeback. I always assumed that I was the only teenager that liked vinyl records. The best parts of my paper are my body paragraphs. I have never been able to give so much information. I found some great sources from the databases we were assigned to use. Not getting very much information was also one of my drawbacks from my old English classes in high school. So having these new sources seemed to be a blessing to me. I would have to say that I am most proud of my bibliography. My works cited page. I can predict that my professor will enjoy my body paragraphs the most. I feel that I have gotten a lot better on my computer skills. I feel like I know now what is more credible than other things. I know how to navigate databases a lot more efficiently. The thing I enjoyed the most about the research process was being able to learn about something that I love. I enjoyed researching. The only thing I didn’t like was having to write the paper. But I can tell you that it was pretty simple for me. I was able to write down information because I had great credible sources. I found exactly what I needed. I didn’t spend a lot of time the week on researching because I found the sources that I wanted right off the bat. The only way I can make some adjustments to my paper would be the grammatical errors. I found some helpful research hints and it would be to only use databases. The reason I say this is because the databases give you citations. You don’t have to spend 20 minutes trying to write a citation from one website. These databases are very credible and the citations are also there for you. This will help make your research a lot quicker. It would also help with the works cited page as well.

Rough Reflection Outline

Madeleine Seltzer's Reflection

The goals that I had at the beginning of the semester varied from expanding my knowledge in grammar to being able to produce a clear essay with an opposing argument. Eventually my goal was to persuade my reader with my research.  I did accomplish being able to differentiate between an exemplification essay and a research essay. My grammar also improved and I learned about logical fallacies and their importance.
Before enrolling in this class, I was unable to focus on a topic and I could not narrow down the argument in order to persuade the reader. This class has helped me discover a way to concentrate on the subject by thinning down the theme and pumping up the research. I became aware of databases this semester and the importance of a reliable source. It made my work so much easier and it let me trust the material I was reading without having to do a background check on the website. I also noticed how crucial an opposing argument is to a research essay, and that the counter argument actually made my initial argument even stronger.
The chunks of my paper that I am most proud of are within the meshing of global ideas and individual benefits. Before I started writing this paper, I was having tremendous trouble narrowing down my topic. I wanted to be able to persuade the reader and I felt like writing a paper about local green commuting would reassure this. Instead, I decided to go in the opposite direction and draw the scale much wider. From a global perspective, I was able to achieve my main purpose of exemplifying the beneficial aspects an individual will feel while green commuting. At the same time I was able to show why some countries adapt more than the United States. I think that my revelations and my counter argument are solid parts of this essay as well. Since my thesis and the point I was trying to prove was about enhancing an individual’s life by green commuting, I felt like the counter argument needed to fit that level. Instead of researching the reason why taxes are not spent on better public transit in most cities in the United States, I decided to press on the hesitation of why people do not green commute because of fear of danger and inconvenience. I assume that my instructor will be fond of my topic on a personal level, because she is a green commuter herself. I also think that my instructor will be impressed with my counter argument and the thought that I put into it. It was difficult for me to even find a counter argument for this topic because it seemed strange to me that anyone would be opposed to exercise, improving air quality and finding more ways to be immersed in social settings. I then began to think about why more people do not participate in green commuting and landed on a couple issues that individuals battle with, such as fear of danger and simple inconvenience.
The technology aspect of this class overwhelmed me in the beginning. I had barely read blogs let alone published one of my own. I think that the instructor did a tremendous job on interconnecting more technological factors into learning. It makes sense as a student, to be introduced to more web skills because that is where the majority of information can be found. Formatting my papers in the MLA format was a constant struggle throughout the class, but by the end of this paper I felt confident in the citations and I was not hesitant to find more resources just because I did not want to have to cite them. I enjoyed unraveling the argument and discovering new points that I could use, I found that exciting and interesting. It kept my motivation going through this process. I also enjoyed going to the writing center and seeking out help there. At one point of this process I felt completely overwhelmed. I had put a lot into the topic that I had planned to write on but I did not feel attached to it. I felt like it was too far to turn back so I proceeded with my initial topic. I am glad that I did because in this process I learned that any topic can have many different features and as the writer, I did not need to feel stuck, I just had to refresh my research and become more passionate.
The most useful and helpful part of this entire development was when I gathered all of the research I was interested in and then wrote a paragraph that explained why those pieces of data were crucial to my topic. After that, I narrowed down my topic and from there I considered the opposing argument. Once the opposing argument was set in stone I was able to work around that and counter it throughout the essay, which in the end persuaded the reader even more.

12-3-15

For my first year in college I was expecting big changes. With the work load and the professors, I expected much and was prepared for the classes. I made goals for myself to accomplish especially in my writing. I have always been told that I am a decent writer and that I have great ideas. I wanted to be able to connect those ideas with my research. I write semi casual and make mistakes with the tone of my writing. My goals were to make my writing easier to understand and follow my ideas better. Another goal was to work on word choice and add better vocabulary in my writing. My third goal was to accomplish papers with ought the stress of overloading myself. I wanted to pace out my papers so that they could have the proper time to be edited and drafted. Goals that I have accomplished would be goals like writing my papers on time and drafting them more frequently. Another goal that I felt I worked on was to add vocabulary that made my essay flow better. One more goal that I felt I reached was my sentence structure. I felt that I made it easier to follow my ideas in my paper. Goals that I still need to work on would be my run on sentences. I seem to write run on sentences a lot and need to work them out. The other goal I made that I didn’t reach was my MLA citations. On my research paper I wrote about hunting and the economy. I was surprised to learn about how much money is received from license sales and federal taxes. I didn’t know that the money from duck stamps went to land conservation. I didn’t know that there were websites that helped promote hunting. Colorado’s website is hug a hunter. I felt the best part of my paper was the way I related my facts to my thesis. I felt every point I made helped draw conclusions back to my thesis. I think I also did well on word choice in my paper I feel that that was good. I think my instructor will like the way I structured my essay. It was full of information and I think having it tie together with my thesis and my main ideas will help make my instructor like my paper. I also feel like my instructor will like the data that was collected, the data is concrete and informs about hunting sales and how it helps the economy. I feel like I stayed somewhat the same with my computer and web skills. I learned how to blog which was beneficial. I learned how to cite sources from online websites. I learned easier ways to type on the paper by focusing on my typing patterns. The research process was a good way to stay focused and gather great data. I enjoy learning new facts about my subject. I didn’t like having to search through multiple articles to find little pieces of data. Things that are easy for me when researching would be the ability to fine reputable sources. Things that are hard for me is trying to find good factual data. I found mostly what I needed. I spent about three hours a week on research looking up my data. I felt that the time restraints were fine for my research paper. The only thing I would do better would be to research more about specific topics that I could include in my essay.  Some hints that I have found that helped me quickly in my research process would be to look at the end of the URL in a website. Websites like .org and .gov are great reputable sources. I would like to have a data base to use when I’m researching data.

Rubric Criterion

Topic development:

I feel that after writing my essay that I would receive an A in this category.  My ideas that I choose are fully explored with detail, depth and complexity.  I really go into depth and try to explain the best I can with my ideas.  This is for my research essay and it meets page requirements.

Style:

This is something that I have always had a problem with.  I have a tendency to write very casually.  It has been this way ever since the sixth grade.  I have problems with several areas so I would give myself a C.  I wish I was able to write more scholarly and less like I’m talking to the reader.

Works Cited page/ MLA manuscript format:

This is something that I feel very confident on.  I have never been able to really do a good job on works cited pages but this time I would give myself an A.  I really have minor flaws if any on it.  I used very good sources in this essay.  I used the citations that were given to me and so I feel confident that they will work correctly.

Rubric Criterion

Thesis statement: I found that looking through my research essay that my thesis is fairly strong. I would rate my thesis is a strong B. The thesis is clear and understandable. My thesis is clear and specific about hunting and the economy. The thesis is upfront in the essay and drives the essay in all other points argued.

Topic development: My ideas addressed in the essay are understandable. These ideas are general and specific but I could make them more clear and fit them better in my essay. I think that they average a C grade. There definitely addressed but are mere and not as support full as they can be. They can have more detail and thought process involved in the essay. They tie together my main points but I feel that they could better be explained in my essay.

Clarity/Coherence: In honest perspective I believe that I have averaged about a D in this field. My ideas are fairly on topic but ramble and are not as specific as I would like. My ideas ramble sometimes in my essay and not always gather together my thoughts which can confuse the reader. I would like to go through my essay and read my run on sentences and shorten maybe even take out unwanted ideas. I need to keep my idea specific to my points but also make sure that they tie back to my thesis statement.

Research Essay Blog

Improvements made to my essay by myself:

1.      I worked on the punctuation problem in my essay.  I used commas way too often and need to slow down my writing in other ways.

2.      I worked on a ton of grammar problems.  I found a ton in the essay.  There were just words that did not make sense with my writing.  This has hopefully been permanently fixed in the essay.

3.      I worked on writing less casually.  I have always written like this and it is just a hard thing for me to correct, but hopefully it will sound much less casual.

Improvements made to my essay by peer reviewed essay:

1.      Connor told me to first work on my small details to support my freaking point.

2.      He told me to use more scientific evidence to add to me debate.

3.      He told me to work on my casual writing style which was funny due to the fact that that was one of the things I choose to work on from the beginning.

Chapter 17 Reading Response

Reading Response

Chapter 17

For chapter 17, I learned about integrating sources and avoiding plagiarism. Now to me, I see a common theme throughout this whole last two chapters in it’s about using MLA format. For some reason I hate MLA format. I think the world be a better place if bibliographies didn’t exist. I find giving credit to the authors is an important aspect of writing but I’m just lazy and hate writing MLA works cited pages. I learned about paraphrasing which is something that I do quite often since I can never figure out what to write besides what the author writes. I seem to have the same problem where when I read the author’s writing I simply want to copy and paste what he or she may have said. So paraphrasing and learning how to use it is something that I will use for the rest of my life. I also learned about summarizing which is a little different than paraphrasing but it’s somewhat the same as well. Summarizing involves a brief restatement in my own words in a passage for the main idea. I also learned about quoting, and when you quote you need to use the writer’s exact words as they appear in the source including all punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. And the quote has to be enclosed by quotation marks. I learned what synthesizing was. When I write a synthesis was supposed to combine paraphrases, summaries, and quotations with my own ideas. That was something I did not know before. I also learned how to avoid plagiarism which is something that I’ve never had to actually deal with that now I know just a little bit more on how to avoid it. Overall this chapter was a good read and I did learn a lot but I am tired of writing MLA works cited pages.

Now being a student in college I have to give a educated response on how this chapter affects my student life. Academically this was a good chapter to read because it did teach me a lot I really hadn’t known before and also refresh my memory on quite a few things. This chapter in this book is very handy for a person who wants to be able to write a solid good works cited page and learn how to avoid plagiarism. I believe that summarizing and paraphrasing things from the author is something that is a necessity for the student to achieve. It helps the student look simply smarter in than they actually could be. I think that high school students should be using this book and taught early on how to stay away from plagiarism because it is a serious problem that society faces today. A fun story I have is when I was a junior in high school, my principal who is no longer the principle of meet high school was accused of plagiarizing a graduation speech. It was true that he actually plagiarize the speech and spoke the exact same words the original speaker at spoke. I think it’s funny that he was the one to do this due to the fact that he was a doctor. Plagiarizing is something that is a big problem in our culture and this book helps a lot by explaining what plagiarizing is and how you can avoid it.

Chapter 17 Reading Response

Chapter 17 describes the uses of avoiding plagiarism with integrating sources into your essay. chapter 17 is useful because it gives examples on how to work through problems that may occur or showing and guiding you through scenarios that you may encounter. it goes over summarizing and quoting sources and synthesizing sources as well.it goes over common mistake areas of plagiarism. as a student I would like to see more examples of work cited pages. Overall this is a useful tool for helping with plagiarism

Ethos: This is the ethical part of argumentation.  It is the credibility if the author and or speaker.  It is often conveyed by differing the views.

SB 1:  Listening to vinyl records is a better way to listen to any form of musical media, due to the fact that collectors listen to them.

SB 1: Listing to records in the olden days was a form of social gatherings.

SB 2: Listening to records is a much more intimate way to listen to music because of how the person listening to them has to be so much more involved.

SB 3: It can send you to a different time, and help create a new outlook on listening to music.

Logos: This is the part of reasoning in an argument.  This is where logic comes into play with persuading.  It’s the logical things to understand.

Chapter 16 Reading Response

Chapter 16
Chapter 16 is about finding and evaluating sources. Chapter 16 honestly really helps students understand what to look for in sources. It is added information that is needed to help determine accurate sources.

For a student I would go more in depth for understating how to locate information on the internet. Maybe adding sources or other valuable websites would help build credible sources. Using keywords helps a lot with sorting out information.

Chapter 16 Reading Response

Chapter 16 Reading Review

English 121

Chapter 16 was about finding and evaluating sources. I really like this chapter because it taught me a lot. It showed me that there was a difference in types of research. Research like magazines, newspapers, journals, and books and even electronic databases. Now I knew these were always to research something but for some reason that didn’t really hit me that they were that different from each other. I think the best way to get information is from databases due to the fact they give you a citation at the very end of each article. I’m very lazy person and I really like this fact. This chapter gave me a lot of exercises to do and I actually did some in my brain. It taught me how to properly enter a URL and what URL means. I did not know what URL meant but now I know it means uniform resource locator. I learned more about keyword searches and how to properly write them out and learn new strategic ways to analyze what I really want to search. I learned what a subject search was and it helped me quite a bit. I wish I was taught more of this in high school because when I’m learning more from a textbook I did in all my high school career I think that there is a flaw in the public schooling system at that point. I never knew about evaluating sources I mean I knew how to tell if a site was credible or not but never really knew how to evaluate one until now. I learned more about biases and can actually connect that to mass media today. It wasn’t a very long chapter but it really helped me out a lot.

So being a student in college I have to give an educated response. I believe that this chapter is excellent for anyone who is trying to learn how to research something. It has timely a lot of new things that I haven’t learned before. I think this is a great learning tool and I believe that this book is really a great guide for doing almost anything you want to do in writing. It helped me discover if resources comprehensive, the sources current, if the source is objective, if the source is accurate, and if the source is authoritative. It simply helped me learn (which is all you could ask for in a class, same goes for a lesson).  I believe that this book should be a must-read for anyone who is trying to learn how to write well. It is definitely helping me quite a bit.

READING RESPONSE!

Chapter 16 Reading Response
By Madeleine Seltzer

Chapter 16 titled Finding and Evaluating Sources was extremely helpful. It solidified my idea

about databases and whether or not I should use them more. The internet is usually the first place I

turn to, along with many of my other peers, when investigating a subject. As I prepare to do more

research in my academic career I found several aspects to be tedious. For example, the book refers to

the internet as not always the best choice because of its currency and accuracy. I have found that to

be true. Most of the time I stumble upon articles that are not objectively written and out of date.

Nothing is filtered on the internet whereas the databases are edited by scholars, and written by

scholars. Instead of forcing citations from the internet, this chapter has successfully persuaded me to

look at more college libraries and databases.

Preston Prospectus

1. Thesis:

Vinyl records are the right choice for listing to any type of music.

2. Reflection:

The reason that this matters to me so much and why it would make a difference to me if I were able to demonstrate the validity of my argument is because this is something that very much interests me and it’s something that I am really passionate about. Writing a paper on this subject would really help me describe what I really feel about the differences in sound. It could help show that there really is a difference in the sounds and intimacy. It will also help draw a light on people who also believe this to be true as well as me. This is something that I want to talk about and bring people to know what I mean. This could really help people want to start listening to records like I do and get them more influenced that vinyl is the way to go.

3. What I know and don’t know:

I know a ton about this topic and really could persuade somebody to go out and by a record player and start listening to records. I know that right off the bat that when you listen to a record and a record player that you are going to be hit with a complealty different sound. The sound is going to be warmer due to the friction that the record needle and the record make while the record is in motion. I know that there are many differ4nt types of records and they all have different sounds. I also know that records are worth much more than any other form of tangible music. I want to learn about why other people think that records are the way to go and how they feel. I want to know how records originated, and when. I want to know how CDs work and how much music they can hold. I want to know why people don’t use records as much as they use CDs and other forms of music.

4. Questions:

Why dis records die off? Why do people still listen to them? Why don’t people listen to them? What makes them more valuable than other forms of music? Why are there so many types of records? Why do records sound different?

5. List of possible interview:

People that prefer records over other forms of music. Record store owners and employees. Record collectors.

Madeleine's Research

Part One:

IMPRESSION: I began this assignment by searching the topic of violence in video games. The links that popped up were relevant to my curiosity. I started by clicking on the third link down on the search engine. Immediately, a pop up came to the surface of my screen. It gave me the option to sign up for the websites email list. After I closed out that screen I proceeded to investigate the procon.org website. I quickly learned that this website’s main focus was to explore the pros and cons of controversial issues. A list of over fourteen bullet points of the pros and cons of video games and violence appeared. The website claims that they are a non-profit which lead me to find the donation box in the upper left hand corner.

GATHERING THE INFORMATION: The website starts out by stating “Did You Know?” facts and then proceeds to list over fourteen pros and cons that are filled with information. I noticed that after almost each line, the work is cited. When I clicked on the number it brought me to a footnotes page on the same website where all the work was cited. I think that this site has appropriate material for its purpose. Although the information is extremely wordy and a little too thick for the reader. This website is pretty up to date with its information as well as its predictions. It sources information from 2014. There is a link on the website for all of its donors and sponsors. According to the website the sponsors and donors prefer to remain anonymous though. The other topics on the website are related to the controversial topic that I chose to search.

I think that in today's society the culture of violence is heavily influenced by video games. The use of guns and weapons in games are excessive and the gender roles are also showing signs of inequality. Playing violent video games causes more bullying and fighting. (Anderson)

Part Two:

EVALUATE: My impression of the quality of this article is that it is written by an expert. As soon as I saw that the APA constructed the study, I was sold.

COMPARE: I feel like the information provided from the database does not need to be second guessed. The author is a psychiatrist and is apart of the American Psychological Association which ensures that what I am reading is written by educated people. Also the article from the database also introduces an opposing argument and still persuades the reader. The article from the web simply just lists pros and cons and does not give enough valid reasons why or why not the reader should side with them.

RECORD: One source that the article has in its Reference List is the American Psychological Association.
