Argumentation Chapter 14

Reading Response for Chapter 14 by Madeleine Seltzer

This chapter is about argumentation and how to take a stand and reason with the reader. As I read this chapter I was informed of new ideas that I did not know before. For example, I always heard the words pathos, logos and ethos but I was never exactly sure what they meant.  I also found it really interesting that in an argumentative essay one should not only cater to the reader's reasoning but also to their emotions. These are strategies that truly persuade the reader to side with you on the important topic that one chooses to write about.
I know that as a writer and reader myself that I tend to be more persuaded by a speaker who is solid on the argument they are writing about. It is important to introduce an opposing argument or a antithesis, but if the speaker is swaying on the topic then it is hard for me to side with them.
Credibility is important when it comes to the evidence of the essay. Facts and opinions are fine sources of support but it is important to include an expert opinion so that the reader isn't just going off of the writer's own judgement and beliefs.
